Ellevation + WIDA 2020

The 2020 English Language Development Standards Framework embraces an asset-based focus. We know that the new guidelines will be integrated into instruction - and, eventually, into assessments. Ellevation team members have been collaborating closely with the team at WIDA to ensure we are aligned to help you every step of the way.

The great news is: Whether you are an Ellevation Education partner already, or considering becoming one, our platform, professional learning and instructional offerings already address and support many of the 2020 WIDA Framework’s Big Ideas and Key Language Uses.

Equity, Integration, Collaboration, and Functional Approach

Big Ideas

The 2020 Edition of the WIDA ELD Standards Framework is anchored by four Big Ideas that are interwoven throughout. They support the design of standards-based educational experiences that are student-centered, culturally and linguistically sustaining, and responsive to multilingual learners’ strengths and needs.

Functional Approach to Language Development

As the specific details are defined for how Key Language Uses, Language Expectations, and Proficiency Level Descriptors impact teaching and learning, Ellevation will be updating its products to support these transitions

Key Language Uses

WIDA identified four Key Language Uses—Narrate, Inform, Explain, and Argue—that appear across all content areas and that teachers can use to prioritize and organize the integration of content and language. Starting in August, all Ellevation Math Primers will have updated Confidence Questions that prompt students to use the academic language functions needed for rich math discourse: inform, explain, and argue.

Proficiency Level Descriptors

The 2020 WIDA framework introduced 72 new Proficiency Level Descriptors (PLDs) to be used to describe student’s progress towards English language proficiency. All 72 of the new PLDs are now available in the Ellevation Platform WIDA 2020 Goal bank.

The addition of these new PLDs enables Ellevation partners to formatively assess and track student progress to English language proficiency. Goals provides a consistent set of tools and visualizations to monitor student growth over the course of the school year.

When implemented with fidelity, our data and instructional planning platform, professional learning and instructional products will help you accelerate learning for your multilingual learners.
